The Congo American Language Institute (CALI) is part of the direct English teaching programs of the U.S. States Department under the auspices of the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. CALI’s goal is to provide quality English language instruction as well as knowledge of American culture. Its curriculum focuses on developing all four skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing with a context which is meaningful to students. CALI serves as an important bridge between the cultures of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the United States. The institute has an average of 1200 students per session, and several high-ranking government officials, businessmen, as well as basketball star Mutombo Dikembe are graduates of CALI.

The CALI English Club (CEC) consists of an active group of students who meet on a regular basis. Its officers are elected every other session. Its regular activities include discussions and debates on various topics suggested by students themselves dealing with socio-cultural and economic matters. Movies and follow-up discussions are also an integral part of the CEC’s activities. For more exposure to the English language, native guest speakers are usually invited to speak on various topics.

If you are a former student of CALI, please contact us! We are creating a list of CALI alumni and we would like to be in touch with you. Email us at cali-kin@micronet.cd.

CALI offers a six-level General English program. Level one corresponds to low beginner while level six corresponds to upper advanced. Certificates are given after students successfully complete level four (intermediate) and level six (advanced). After completing the general English program, students have the option to take our “professional” courses:

Certificates are given after students successfully complete Advanced Conversation II and Business English II. These classes meet 40 hours each session, for a total of 80 hours of instruction. No certificate is given for completing the 100-hour TOEFL Preparation class.
